More about Redwood Luthier Sets

Redwood - S. sempervirens, endl., - An ancient species from the coastal mountains of Northern California, Redwood trees are among the largest living organisms on the earth, capable of growing to a staggering 300 plus feet in height and reaching an amazing 2000 years in age. Redwood is extremely resilient to rot and infestation, so we are able to salvage very old sinker logs and stumps, and reclaim old beams, to provide high quality tonewood, without damaging the remaining old growth groves.

Redwood luthier sets are very light in weight yet possesses excellent tonal qualities. Curly Redwood tops for electric guitars and Redwood soundboards for acoustic guitars produce a rich warm low end response, yet clean and crisp in the mid to upper end. The projection and sustain are excellent.

Old growth Redwood is harder than second growth, measuring about 480 on the Janka scale. It is a bit more brittle than other woods, so a little care must be exercised when working with Redwood.

Curly figured Redwood luthier sets often exhibits figure that we call "Monster curl", giant one inch pitch curls spanning across the grain. Curly redwood is actually caused by a wavy structure in the grain of the wood caused by stresses in the tree. The result is rolling reflection of light off that curly grain as the wood, or light source, is moved. Figured Redwood can also appear as more of a quilted or broken curl pattern.

Sinker Redwood is a term used for Redwood that has been under water for an extended time. Sinker Redwood will often take on various colors from minerals present while submerged. Red, orange, brown and black colors can all occur in sinker Redwood.

Redwood burl is another visually appealing wood. Redwood burl can offer great visual appeal, however the tonal qualities usually fall short of straight grain or curly Redwood as Redwood burl lacks the long grain structure found in other Redwood, and does not resonate as well.

In short, choosing curly Redwood tops, or Redwood soundboards will add great tone and look to your next guitar or bass, and you get a rare ancient wood species, wood that is 1000 years old or more, and salvaged so no harm was done to our biosphere. Does it get any better than that?
