Douglas Fir Guitar Wood
Douglas fir - Pseudotsuga menziesii, is a conifer from the North West coast of America. Douglas fir is an evergreen and rates among the hardest of all "softwoods", but is a unique species and not a true Fir. It is recorded as the 2nd tallest conifer on earth, exceeded only by Redwood, and can live to be over 1000 years old. The largest living specimen is over 326 feet tall. The tonal qualities of Douglas fir are astonishing. The response, projection, sustain and tonal complexity are all vastly superior, as are lateral stiffness and workability. The hardness of old growth Douglas fir hovers around 700 on the Janka Scale, and it only weighs about 3 lbs/bf. It is available in tight fine straight grain, and sometimes in intensely figured (curly) form, but very rarely. 3/4 sawn curly Douglas fir may be the most visually amazing wood we have ever seen. This is an ideal wood for use as acoustic guitar soundboards, backs and sides, and bracing wood. It is also ideal for electric guitar body blanks, tone panels and top sets. |
