More information about Port Orford Cedar Luthier SetsPort Orford Cedar - Chamaecyparis lawsoniana - also known as Port Orford White Cedar, Oregon Cedar, Ginger Pine or Lawson Cypress, is a rare variety of Cypress that evolved in a very limited range along the Pacific Coast, from far northern California into southern Oregon. Despite harsh conditions, these trees have existed in the Pacific NW for over 50 million years and can grow to 180 feet and live to be over 500 years old. Port Orford Cedar is one of the most desirable tonewoods growing in North America. It is a creamy, off-white color with straight, somewhat uneven medium grain. It has an almost ginger like aroma, and ring counts in Port Orford Cedar can exceed 40/inch. It is considered to have the highest strength to weight ratio of any wood and rates at 720 on the Janka hardness scale. Electric guitars and basses made from Port Orford Cedar weigh from 5 to 6 lbs and acoustic guitars weigh 2 to 3 lbs. Port Orford Cedar is also one of the most acid, pest and rot resistant woods known. Thus, we are able to salvage all of our Port Orford Cedar luthier sets from standing dead or fallen logs, to provide high quality tonewood without sacrificing living trees. Port Orford Cedar soundboards were the first application for guitars. Occasionally curly Port Orford Cedar soundboards are available and display large curly figure like curly Redwood, but they are rare. Port Orford Cedar soundboards work equally well for steel string guitars and nylon string guitars. Port Orford Cedar soundboards have excellent projection and sustain. Acoustic guitars made with Port Orford Cedar backs and sides, combined with a Port Orford Cedar soundboard and Port Orford Cedar neck are truly amazing in sound and weight. This combination works equally well for steel string or nylon string acoustic guitars. Port Orford Cedar body blanks for semi-hollow or solid body guitars are a perfect choice due to their weight, strength, stability and highly resonant tonal qualities. Port Orford Cedar body blanks shape, glue and finish with no problems (and your shop will smell wonderful). Port Orford Cedar bodies work equally well for either electric guitars or basses. Port Orford Cedar guitar necks are the perfect choice for many applications. Port Orford Cedar guitar necks are very light weight, stable and finish to a glass-like feel.
