More information about Maple guitar sets.Maple is one of the most widely known and widely utilized hardwoods growing in North America. In the Pacific NW, Western Big Leaf Maple - Acer macrophyllum - is a deciduous hardwood that grows along the Pacific Coast, from California to British Columbia. Figured curly Maple and quilted Maple guitar sets are usually Western Maple. It is moderate in hardness, with excellent strength, good tonal qualities, and weighs about 3 lbs/BF. Eastern Red and Rock Maple are substantially harder the their western cousin, with Rock Maple being the hardest. These Eastern varieties both yield beautifully curled (fiddleback) material, and the Rock Maple also yields exquisite Birds Eye patterns. Maple has been extensively used in musical instrument construction for centuries. Fiddleback Maple is the term used to describe curly figured Maple, usually with curl that is spaced about 1/4" apart. Curly Maple would include any size curl pattern. Quilted Maple is typically a pattern of pillow like, or bubble like figure covering the surface of the wood. Figured curly Maple guitar tops and quilted Maple guitar tops can be finished to yield a wide variety of looks.
